Tyler Ann Blanton is a visual artist living in Charleston, S.C. working in experimental mixed media painting. A former ballerina, her study of the arts began in New York City, Russia and Tbilisi Georgia with classical ballet and continued with painting. She received a B.A. in Studio Art from Smith College and M.A. in Painting from NYU studies abroad in Venice, Italy where she lived and worked for the next seven years.

Tyler also studied at Parsons in New York City, the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland and lived and worked as an artist in Rome, Italy. Her paintings are often large in scale, capturing the body’s movement in space with hints of socio-political and spiritual undertones that are not always immediately apparent.

Once a mural artist in New York City, she is now revisiting her passion to paint unique murals on large interior and exterior surfaces in her home town and whatever beautiful distances a commission may take her. While working large scale is a passion, going back to the basics of watercolor, inks and minimalism and sharing these skills of creating art with others in her community has been feeding her soul as of late. Her paintings are bright and strong with vibrancy of color and emotion, always pushing new boundaries and finding new edges to cross.

Artist Philosophy.

I seek greater truth through dissolution and our planets need for love. I am often repressed by brushes and so experiment with my hands and the objects they hold. I am constrained by adhering to a single medium and style, yet continuously searching for new materials that are more and more environmentally sustainable. The works purpose is to bring new awareness toward a better way of living as subject matter and materials push for conversation and questioning, thus opening the mind and spirit for dialogue. I am inspired by the transcendence of Thoreau’s “Walking” first defined…

I wish to paint a picture for nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil,—to regard consciousness as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of the soul of man, rather than a member of society.”

I am the Universal mind, and through my work do I ponder the soul of Man. What you see is the reflection of my movements on canvas. I am not complete. Sometimes I speak to the canvas, sometimes it speaks to me. Out of this negotiation does my subconscious speak. May I achieve a communication that stirs your soul.

Long live art.
